Library / Media Center

Our library is a hub for student learning, reading, and discovery. In addition to the school library, teachers may maintain individual collections of age-appropriate books in their classrooms to support literacy and foster a love of reading.

Jessica Carter

Mrs. Jessica Carter

Mrs. Carter is the Librarian in the Karns Elementary School West Library for our K through 2nd grade students. She joined Karns Elementary School as an Interim Librarian for the 3^rd through 5^th grade students in January 2014 before accepting the K through 2^nd position in May 2014. Her core philosophy is to grow students into independent, passionate users of the library, empowering them to select books of personal interest and learn new information using different media.

Mrs. Carter has almost 12 years of experience in the library and has served on multiple committees for the KCS Library department and at Karns Elementary. She served on the KCS Library Department Exemplar Team in 2020-21 to create lessons for the district and virtual learners. She has been a mentor for new librarians across the district and student Librarians from UT. Mrs. Carter holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from East Tennessee State University, May 2012. She also earned a master’s degree in Educational Media and Educational Technology from ETSU, December 2013.

Jessica Huffman

Mrs. Jessica Huffman

Mrs. Huffman is the Librarian in the Karns Elementary School East Library for our 3^rd through 5^th grade students. Prior to joining the education profession, she worked for several years as a Registered Dietitian and spent time as a stay-at-home mom. Mrs. Huffman began her second career at A.L. Lotts Elementary School as a volunteer in the A.L. Lotts library in 2017 and as an Educational Assistant in 2019. While at A.L. Lotts, Mrs. Huffman discovered her passion for the library’s role in supporting learning, encouraging reading, and fostering a growth mindset. While studying to become a school librarian, Mrs. Huffman completed her elementary school student teaching at Karns Elementary and felt fortunate to join the staff in the Fall of 2024.

Mrs. Huffman holds a bachelor’s degrees in both Animal Science and Biological Sciences from North Carolina Sate University. She also earned a master’s degree in Human Nutrition from Winthrop University and, most recently, a master’s degree in Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee in 2024.
